Cleveland Erupts for Four in Fifth, Rolls Cincinnati 6-1
Kyle Manzardo punctuated a dominant Cleveland performance with a 425-foot homer to right center in the seventh, but the game was effectively over long before that. A four-run fifth inning — built entirely on singles, walks, and a sacrifice fly — broke Cincinnati's back and never let them back in.
The story of the night was Cleveland's fifth inning, and it wasn't pretty for Cincinnati's Brady Singer. Singer had held the Guardians scoreless through four frames, but the fifth unraveled fast. Bazzana singled to left to score Kwan, dropping Cincinnati's win probability from 29% to 20% — that single swing was the moment the game turned. From there it cascaded: Manzardo walked to score Ramírez, Arias walked to score DeLauter, and Bailey capped the damage with a sacrifice fly to right that scored Bazzana. Four runs, four plate appearances with the bases loaded, and Singer was done. He finished with 4.1 innings, 6 hits, 4 walks, and 3 strikeouts — the walk total tells the real story. Cleveland didn't need to beat him; Singer beat himself.
On the other side, Joey Cantillo was sharp in a way that deserved a better narrative than it got. He went 4.0 innings, allowed 4 hits and 1 walk, and struck out 8 — that's a dominant strikeout rate for a four-inning outing, and it looks like Cleveland was managing him on a pitch count rather than pulling him for performance reasons. Cincinnati's lone run came in the sixth off the bullpen, when Marte singled to center to score Myers and make it 4-1. It was a brief flicker. Matt Festa and Cade Smith each threw a clean inning after that — Festa with 2 strikeouts and no baserunners, Smith with 2 strikeouts despite 2 walks — and Cincinnati never threatened again.
Manzardo's seventh-inning homer — 425 feet to right center — was the exclamation point, and Kwan's sacrifice fly an at-bat later pushed it to 6-1 and closed the book. Bazzana went 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored, Arias went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run, and Ramirez went 2-for-6 and scored once. This was a collective effort, not a one-man show, and that appears to be exactly what makes Cleveland's offense difficult to game-plan against. Cincinnati's only real contributor was Marte, who went 1-for-4 with the RBI single. The Guardians won this one going away.
