Abrams, Wood Go Back-to-Back to Bury Arizona, 10-7

CJ Abrams and James Wood each hit two home runs, combining for six RBI as Washington walked off with a 10-7 win over Arizona on July 26. The story of the night was a fifth-inning eruption that flipped the game on its head — and never really let Arizona back in.

Arizona looked like the team in control through four innings. Gabriel Moreno doubled home Geraldo Perdomo in the first, Perdomo went deep to right in the third, and after Abrams answered with a homer that needed an umpire review to count, Ketel Marte crushed a 411-foot shot to center in the fourth to push it to 3-2. A Moreno sacrifice fly in the fifth made it 4-2, and Washington's bullpen-heavy pitching situation — Miles Mikolas lasted just 4.0 innings, allowing 3 earned runs on 4 hits — appeared to be a problem.

Then the fifth inning happened. James Wood launched a 405-foot two-run homer to center, scoring Nuñez and tying the game at four. That swing alone moved Washington's win probability from 41% to 63% — a 22-point lurch in a single at-bat. Before Arizona could exhale, Abrams followed with a 399-foot shot to center, scoring Lile and putting Washington up 6-4. Two swings. Game turned. The fifth inning went from a deficit to a two-run lead, and Arizona's Kohl Drake — who gave up 4 earned runs in 4.0 innings — was done.

Washington kept piling on in the seventh. A House double scored Crews, a Young double scored House, and then García Jr. reached on an infield single while Young scored on a throwing error by the pitcher, pushing the lead to 9-4. Wood added a 418-foot solo shot in the eighth to make it 10-5. Arizona mounted a late push — Waldschmidt singled home Carroll in the ninth, and Arenado grounded into a run — but the 10-7 final was never in doubt. Abrams finished 3-for-5 with 2 HR and 3 RBI; Wood went 2-for-4 with 2 HR and 3 RBI. Those two look like the engine of this offense right now, and Arizona's pitching staff appears to have no answer for either of them.
