Martinez Shuts Out Cleveland as Tampa Rolls 3-0
Nick Martinez threw six innings of shutout ball — four hits, zero walks, five strikeouts — and Tampa Bay's offense did just enough damage in the fifth and sixth to make it hold up. Cleveland was blanked 3-0, managing nothing against a Rays pitching staff that combined to allow just four hits all night.
The story of the night was the fifth inning, and it started with Junior Caminero. With Yandy Díaz on base, Caminero doubled to right, scoring Díaz and sending Jonathan Aranda to third. That single swing moved Tampa Bay's win probability from 71% to 83% — a 12-point jump that effectively put the game in the Rays' hands. Moments later, a sacrifice fly to left scored Aranda, and just like that Tampa Bay had a 2-0 lead built on two outs and smart situational baseball. Cleveland never answered.
The sixth inning closed the door. Hunter Feduccia dropped a sacrifice bunt to first, scoring Mesa Jr. and pushing Palacios to second to make it 3-0. It looks like Tampa Bay's approach — string hits together, manufacture runs, don't give the other team a foothold — was executed about as cleanly as you can draw it up. Díaz went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Chandler Simpson also went 2-for-4. Aranda scored a run. This was a collective, professional offensive performance, not a one-man show.
On the other side, Tanner Bibee had a rough night. He allowed 9 hits and 3 earned runs across 6 innings, walking 2 and striking out 5. The hit total is the number that stings — nine baserunners in six frames is a grind, and Tampa Bay made him pay in the innings that mattered. Will Dion came on in relief and was sharp, throwing 2 scoreless innings with 4 strikeouts and no hits allowed, but the damage was already done. Travis Bazzana went 2-for-4 for Cleveland and appears to have been one of the few bright spots in an otherwise flat offensive showing. The Guardians managed nothing against Martinez through six, and Garrett Cleavinger handled the ninth with a scoreless frame of his own. Tampa Bay's pitching staff combined for 4 hits allowed, 0 earned runs, and 13 strikeouts. That's a dominant collective effort, and it's hard to argue Cleveland had much of a chance once the fifth inning unfolded the way it did.
