Sasaki Dominates, Tucker Breaks It Open as LAD Tops NYM 4-2
Roki Sasaki threw 7.0 innings of three-hit, one-run ball with 9 strikeouts, and Kyle Tucker's two-run homer in the eighth was the knockout punch. Los Angeles left New York with a 4-2 win on July 24th, and it wasn't nearly as close as the final score suggests.
The Mets drew first blood in the second inning when Luis Robert Jr. sent one 381 feet to left to put New York up 1-0. That lead held until the fourth, when Rojas hit a sacrifice fly to right, scoring Freddie Freeman to knot it at one. That's where the story of the night begins to tilt hard toward Los Angeles — because while the Mets were scratching for runs, Sasaki was quietly suffocating their lineup. Three hits, nine strikeouts, two walks across seven innings. The Mets simply had no answer for him.
Los Angeles took the lead for good in the seventh when Shohei Ohtani hit a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Teoscar Hernandez and pushing Rushing to third — LAD 2, NYM 1. Then came the moment that ended any real suspense. In the eighth, Tucker homered to right center 386 feet with Freeman aboard, making it 4-1. That swing moved New York's win probability from 24% to 7% — a 17-point collapse in a single at-bat. The Mets were done. Francisco Alvarez answered with a solo shot to left, 401 feet, to make it 4-2, but that's the kind of consolation homer that looks like pride more than threat.
Freeman was quietly the engine of this offense — 3-for-4 with two runs scored, crossing the plate on both the Rojas sac fly and the Tucker blast. Tucker finished 2-for-3 with the home run and 2 RBI. Ohtani went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Hernandez added two hits. This was a deep, professional offensive performance against a Sean Manaea who actually wasn't bad — 6.0 innings, 1 earned run — but the LAD lineup wore him down with six hits and made him pay when it counted. Tanner Scott closed it out with a clean ninth, no hits, one strikeout. Los Angeles appears to be exactly what their lineup suggests: a team that can beat you multiple ways on any given night.
