Loftin's Sixth-Inning Single Lifts KC Past SF, 3-2
Kansas City erased a 2-1 deficit with two singles in the sixth inning to walk off with a 3-2 win over San Francisco on Tuesday. The story of the night was a KC offense that stayed patient, strung together contact when it mattered most, and let San Francisco's own mistakes set the table.
Carter Jensen got Kansas City started in the third, launching a 416-foot home run to right center to put KC up 1-0. Luinder Avila was doing his part on the mound — he went 6.1 innings, allowing 5 hits, 2 earned runs, 1 walk, and striking out 7. That's a quality start by any measure, and it looks like Avila gave his team every opportunity to win this game. San Francisco, though, had other ideas.
The Giants clawed back in the fifth. Drew Gilbert singled to right to score J. Rodríguez and tie it at 1-1, then Heliot Ramos grounded into a fielder's choice that scored Gilbert — and when shortstop Tolbert threw the ball away on the play, Koss ended up safe at third. SF led 2-1, and Tyler Mahle, who had surrendered the Jensen homer and exited after 5 innings with 3 earned runs allowed, was off the hook for the lead. The Giants appeared to be in control.
Then came the sixth, and the game's decisive sequence. Vinnie Pasquantino singled to center to score Collins and tie it at 2-2 — a hit that swung KC's win probability from 54% to 73%, a 20-point jump in a single at-bat. That's not a momentum shift, that's a gut punch. One batter later, Nick Loftin singled to left to score Perez and give Kansas City the lead for good at 3-2. Pasquantino finished 2-for-3 with an RBI; Loftin went 2-for-4 with the go-ahead knock. Alex Lange closed it out with a clean inning — no hits, no earned runs, 2 strikeouts — and KC held on. The Giants' bullpen arm Dylan Smith had actually been sharp in relief (1.0 IP, 0 ER, 2 K), but San Francisco's offense couldn't answer after falling behind in the sixth. Three runs on five hits was all KC needed.
