Torkelson Goes Deep Twice, Skubal Dominates in Detroit's 7-0 Rout
Spencer Torkelson hit two home runs and drove in four, and Tarik Skubal struck out nine over seven scoreless innings as Detroit dismantled the Angels 7-0. The game was effectively over before the first inning ended.
Detroit wasted no time. In the first inning, Colt Keith singled to center to score McGonigle and push Dingler to third — and then Torkelson ended any suspense, launching a 415-foot shot to left center that scored Dingler and Keith and made it 4-0 before Los Angeles had recorded a single out of consequence. That three-run blast swung the home win probability from 19% to 9%, and the Angels never recovered. The game was, for all practical purposes, decided in the opening frame.
Detroit kept the foot on the gas in the second. Keith added a sacrifice fly to center to score Outman and push the lead to five, and Riley Greene followed with another sacrifice fly to center, scoring McGonigle and making it 6-0. Keith finished the night a perfect 4-for-4 with two RBI — the story of the night was that Detroit's lineup was relentless top to bottom, with McGonigle scoring twice and Dingler reaching base and scoring as well. Torkelson punctuated it all with a solo shot to center in the fifth, this one traveling 420 feet, to set the final at 7-0. Logan O'Hoppe went 2-for-2 for Los Angeles, but the Angels' offense as a whole had no answer for what Skubal was doing on the mound.
Skubal's line was the kind that makes opposing hitters look foolish: 7.0 innings, 5 hits, 0 earned runs, 0 walks, 9 strikeouts. No free passes, no crooked numbers — just methodical, suffocating control. The Angels cycled through Brent Suter (3.0 IP, 1 ER) and Jose Fermin (2.0 IP, 0 ER) trying to keep the deficit from ballooning further, but Detroit's bats made that a losing battle from the jump. Brenan Hanifee closed it out with a clean inning of relief. This looks like a performance Detroit's rotation can build on — Skubal was sharp, the offense was efficient, and the Angels were never in it.
