Thomas, Perez Go Deep as KC Rolls Past San Diego 6-1
Salvador Perez's 438-foot bomb to center in the sixth inning put the exclamation point on a Kansas City win that was never really in doubt. The Royals handled San Diego 6-1 on Saturday, with Lane Thomas and Perez each going deep and combining for four RBI.
The game turned ugly for San Diego before it ever had a chance to breathe. In the first inning, Thomas launched a 421-foot shot to left center, scoring Carter Jensen and pushing Kansas City to a 2-0 lead. That single swing moved KC's win probability from 60% to 77% — a 17-point lurch that, in hindsight, set the tone for everything that followed. Jensen, who finished 2-for-3 with two runs scored, was at the center of the Royals' early damage.
San Diego did answer. Fernando Tatis Jr. hit a 411-foot homer to left center in the third to make it 2-1, and for a moment it looked like the Padres might have something going. They didn't. Later that same inning, Jac Caglianone doubled to left to score Jensen again, pushing the lead back to 3-1 and effectively ending San Diego's window. Griffin Canning couldn't survive the third, exiting after 3.2 innings having allowed 5 hits and 4 earned runs — a brutal afternoon for a starter who needed length. Isaac Collins added a run-scoring single to center in the fourth, and Perez's two-run blast in the sixth closed the book at 6-1.
On the pitching side, the story of the night was Kansas City's bullpen covering for a shaky Randy Dobnak outing. Dobnak went 4.1 innings, allowing 4 hits and 1 earned run but walking 4 batters — the kind of start that wins games only when your offense does the heavy lifting, which it did. Daniel Lynch IV followed with 2 clean innings, and Beck Way struck out two in a hitless final frame. The Royals' lineup did enough damage early that the pitching staff never had to be perfect, and it wasn't — but it was good enough. Tatis Jr.'s homer was the lone bright spot for San Diego in what appears to have been a thoroughly one-sided afternoon.
