Cronenworth's Three-Run Blast Flips the Script on Arizona
Jake Cronenworth hit a 384-foot home run to right that drove in three runs and swung San Diego's win probability from 56% to 81% in a single swing. The Padres turned a 1-0 deficit into a 4-1 lead they never relinquished, finishing off the Diamondbacks by that same final score.
The whole game lived and died in one inning. Arizona drew first blood when Max Kepler drew a walk that scored Perdomo, with Moreno moving to second and Carroll to third — a patient, grinding way to take a 1-0 lead. San Diego answered immediately: Merrill singled to right to score Tatis Jr. and knot it at one. Then Cronenworth stepped in with Merrill and Sheets on base and sent a 384-foot shot to right, scoring both runners and putting the Padres up 4-1. Three runs, one swing, game effectively over before most fans had finished their first hot dog.
The pitching story is worth telling straight. Zac Gallen took the loss for Arizona, allowing all four earned runs on six hits over six innings, walking three and striking out five — a line that looks worse than his stuff probably was, given that the damage was concentrated in that one chaotic first inning. On the San Diego side, German Marquez was sharp without being dominant: five innings, three hits, zero earned runs, three walks, four strikeouts. He handed a clean lead to the bullpen, and Mason Miller and Jhony Brito made sure it stayed that way — Miller tossed a perfect inning with two strikeouts, and Brito added 1.2 hitless frames with a strikeout of his own. That looks like a bullpen operating with real confidence.
Gabriel Moreno went 2-for-4 and was arguably Arizona's most productive hitter on the night, though the Diamondbacks' offense as a whole couldn't generate anything after that first-inning run. Luis Campusano also went 2-for-3 for San Diego, providing some quiet depth behind the big names. The Padres are also navigating life without Randy Vásquez, who went on the 15-day injured list Friday with a bruised right ankle after taking a comebacker off it in a recent loss to the Dodgers — so getting a quality start from Marquez and a lockdown performance from the back end of the bullpen appears to be exactly what this rotation needed right now. Cronenworth's three-RBI night was the difference, full stop.
