Bauers' 400-Foot Blast Flips the Script in Milwaukee's 3-2 Win
Jake Bauers hit a 400-foot home run to right center in the seventh inning, turning a one-run deficit into a two-run lead and swinging Arizona's win probability from 58% all the way down to 27%. Milwaukee walked out of Arizona with a 3-2 victory, and it wasn't close to happening without that one swing.
For six innings, this game belonged to Arizona. Corbin Carroll set the tone in the first, doubling to right to score Geraldo Perdomo and hand the Diamondbacks a 1-0 lead they'd carry deep into the contest. Eduardo Rodriguez did his part to protect it — working 6.0 innings, allowing 5 hits and 2 earned runs while walking nobody and striking out 3. Milwaukee's Brandon Sproat, meanwhile, was shakier: 4.0 innings, 5 hits, 1 earned run, and 3 walks. The Brewers were getting outhustled on the mound and had nothing to show for it offensively through six frames.
Then the seventh inning happened, and it happened fast. Bauers stepped in and launched a 400-foot shot to right center, scoring Frelick ahead of him and flipping the scoreboard to 2-1 Milwaukee. That single swing moved Arizona's win probability from 58% to 27% — a 31-point collapse in one at-bat. The Brewers weren't done. Joey Ortiz followed with a single to right, scoring Sánchez to push the lead to 3-1. Arizona clawed one back when a fielder's choice grounder scored Troy, but Carroll was thrown out at second in the process, and the rally stalled at 3-2. The story of the night was Milwaukee's ability to pack three runs into one inning after being held scoreless for six.
Geraldo Perdomo was the one bright spot for Arizona's offense, going 3-for-5 with a run scored — the most productive bat on either side. Jackson Chourio went 2-for-4 for Milwaukee, and Gary Sanchez scored a run on 1-for-3. Abner Uribe appears to have been the bridge piece Milwaukee needed out of the bullpen, throwing 1.2 scoreless innings with no hits allowed after Sproat's early exit. Drey Jameson tossed a clean inning for Arizona in relief, but the damage was already done. Milwaukee wins 3-2, and it looks like Bauers' seventh-inning blast is the only play anyone will be talking about from this one.
