DeLauter, Hoskins Erase 4-Run Hole as Cleveland Edges Seattle 6-5
Cleveland trailed 4-1 heading into the eighth inning and looked cooked. Then Chase DeLauter and Rhys Hoskins combined for four RBI in a single frame to flip the game entirely.
Seattle came out swinging. Garver singled to right in the second to score Raleigh, and the Mariners kept the pressure on in the third when Naylor doubled to right to score Rodríguez, then scored himself on a throwing error by shortstop Rocchio. Just like that it was 3-0, and the Mariners tacked on a fourth run in the sixth when Rodríguez reached on an infield single to score Robles. Emerson Hancock was doing his part on the mound — 5.2 innings, 5 hits, 1 earned run, 6 strikeouts — and Seattle looked firmly in control. Gavin Williams gave Cleveland 5.0 innings and matched Hancock's six strikeouts, but he allowed 6 hits and 2 earned runs, and the Guardians' offense had been largely quiet through seven.
Then came the eighth, and everything changed. Schneemann singled to center to score Rocchio and make it 4-2. DeLauter followed with a single to center that scored both Ingle and Schneemann, tying the game at 4. The win probability swung from 24% to 62% on that DeLauter single alone — a 38-point lurch that captured exactly how fast this game turned. Hoskins then doubled to left, scoring DeLauter and Kwan to put Cleveland up 6-4. Seattle challenged the call on the field; it was upheld. The Guardians had scored five runs in one inning without hitting anything out of the ballpark, and Cade Smith and Matt Festa combined to hold the line the rest of the way — Smith with a clean inning, Festa with 1.1 innings and no earned runs allowed.
Seattle made it interesting in the ninth. A throwing error by second baseman Bazzana turned into a multi-base mess — Robles safe at first, safe at second on the error, and Cole Young scored to cut it to 6-5. Young finished 2-for-5 with a run scored, and Julio Rodríguez went 2-for-4 with an RBI, but the Mariners couldn't push the tying run across. The story of the night was Cleveland's refusal to fold: down four in the late innings, they got contributions from Schneemann (2-for-2, 1 RBI), DeLauter (2-for-5, 2 RBI), and Hoskins (2-for-2, 2 RBI) in a rally that looks, frankly, like the kind of eighth inning a team remembers. Final: Cleveland 6, Seattle 5.
