Twins Bullpen Slams Door on Diamondbacks, 4-2
Minnesota's bullpen was untouchable after the fifth inning, combining for two scoreless frames to preserve a 4-2 road win over Arizona on Sunday. The Twins got contributions up and down the lineup while Arizona's offense leaned almost entirely on Ketel Marte.
The story of the night was Minnesota's ability to manufacture runs against a pitcher who, on paper, had no business losing. Jose Cabrera was sharp — 5.0 innings, just 3 hits, 0 earned runs, no walks, 3 strikeouts — and yet the Twins still found a way to put four runs on the board. That's a credit to a lineup that spread the damage around: Ryan Kreidler went 3-for-4 with a run scored, Alex Jackson went 2-for-3 with an RBI, Trevor Larnach went 2-for-4 with an RBI, and Josh Bell was efficient in a 1-for-1 showing that included an RBI and a run. Byron Buxton added two more hits going 2-for-5, continuing what has been a remarkable stretch — the news that he hit his 24th home run the night before, a grand slam in a 10-run fifth inning, only adds to the sense that this version of Buxton is operating at a different level.
Minnesota starter Mike Paredes was the shakier piece of the equation. He allowed 6 hits and 2 earned runs over 5.0 innings, walking three batters — the kind of outing that wins games only when the offense does its job and the bullpen cleans up. Both happened. Cody Laweryson followed with a perfect inning — 1.0 IP, 0 hits, 0 earned runs, 1 strikeout — and Andrew Morris matched that with 1.0 IP, 0 hits, 0 earned runs, and a strikeout of his own. That's two relievers combining for two scoreless frames without surrendering a hit. It looks like Minnesota's late-game arms are a genuine weapon right now.
For Arizona, Ketel Marte was the only consistent threat, going 2-for-5 with both of the Diamondbacks' RBIs. That's a tough ask — one player carrying the entire offensive burden — and it shows in the final score. The D-backs' pitching situation appears increasingly fragile heading into this stretch, with Michael Soroka recently placed on the injured list after exiting a start against this same Minnesota team just two days ago. Arizona countered with Cabrera, who pitched well enough to win, but the bullpen couldn't hold the lead the offense never actually gave him. The Twins took this one cleanly, and it's hard to argue with the result.
