Machado's 5-RBI Night Powers Padres Past Rangers, 6-4
Manny Machado went 2-for-5 with a home run and five RBI to carry San Diego to a 6-4 win over Texas on Saturday. The Rangers were already working without their scheduled starter, and the Padres made them pay for every inch of that disruption.
Texas was forced to pivot when Nathan Eovaldi was scratched with left knee soreness, pushing MacKenzie Gore into the start a day early. Gore was actually solid — 6.0 innings, 5 hits, 1 earned run, 2 walks, and 6 strikeouts — which makes this loss sting more for the Rangers. The problem wasn't Gore. The problem was that San Diego's offense, led by Machado's five-RBI performance, simply had more firepower on the night. Fernando Tatis Jr. crossed the plate three times going 2-for-5, and Jackson Merrill was relentless at 3-for-5 with an RBI. Texas got contributions from Jake Burger (1 HR, 2 RBI) and Wyatt Langford (2-for-4, 2 RBI), but the Rangers' offense couldn't keep pace.
Walker Buehler started for San Diego and went 5.1 innings, allowing 5 hits and 1 earned run while striking out 7. He didn't finish the job, but he didn't need to — what followed was the story of the night from a pitching standpoint. Adrian Morejon came out of the bullpen and delivered 2.0 innings of one-hit, scoreless ball with 5 strikeouts. That's a dominant relief appearance by any measure. Mason Miller then closed it out with a clean 1.0 inning, 1 hit, 0 runs, and 2 strikeouts. The Padres' bullpen combination of Morejon and Miller looks like one of the more lethal late-game pairings in the league right now — 3.0 combined innings, 7 combined strikeouts, and zero earned runs.
For Texas, this appears to be a night where the roster's current fragility showed. Josh Jung went 2-for-5 and scored a run, giving the Rangers something to build on, but the lineup couldn't generate enough to overcome Machado's damage in the middle of San Diego's order. The Rangers are navigating real depth concerns at the moment, and leaning on a last-minute starter change while facing a Padres lineup this dangerous was always going to be a difficult ask. San Diego takes the win, 6-4, with Machado's bat and a lights-out bullpen doing the heavy lifting.
