Pallante Deals Seven Strong, Cardinals Edge Padres 3-2
Andre Pallante gave the Cardinals exactly what they needed — seven innings, six strikeouts, and only two earned runs allowed on four hits. St. Louis did just enough offensively to make it stand, walking away with a 3-2 win over San Diego on June 16.
The story of the night was Pallante's command of the game. Seven innings pitched, six strikeouts, four hits allowed, two earned runs — that's a line that wins ballgames, and it did. He kept San Diego's lineup off-balance long enough for the Cardinals' bullpen to close it out, and the whole performance looks like the kind of outing a rotation anchor delivers when his team needs a steadying hand. Our model favored St. Louis Cardinals (56%), and Pallante made that lean look prescient.
On the other side, Michael King had a rough go of it. He allowed five hits and issued three walks across just 4⅓ innings, giving up all three Cardinals earned runs before exiting. That walk total appears to be the critical difference — free baserunners in a one-run game are a luxury no starter can afford. JJ Wetherholt made King pay, going 3-for-5 with three total bases across five plate appearances to pace the St. Louis offense. Blaze Jordan and Lars Nootbaar each chipped in an RBI and a run scored, providing the margin that ultimately held up. Alec Burleson and Masyn Winn each added a hit as well, giving the Cardinals a balanced, if not explosive, attack.
San Diego's offense wasn't completely absent — Jackson Merrill went 1-for-4 with an RBI and two total bases, keeping the Padres in striking distance. But generating only two runs against a pitcher working as efficiently as Pallante was always going to be an uphill climb. The Padres appear to have left too much on the table against a Cardinals starter who simply wouldn't give them an inch when it mattered. St. Louis takes this one, 3-2.
