MacKinnon's Avalanche Roll Into Philly to Feast on a Struggling Flyers Squad

The Colorado Avalanche arrive at Xfinity Mobile Arena on Monday night carrying a 5-2-1 record and the most dangerous player in the early season. The Philadelphia Flyers, sitting at 1-6-3, need something to go right — and tonight's opponent is not the team to hand them a gift.

Let's start with the elephant in the room: Nathan MacKinnon has 16 points through Colorado's first eight games — 6 goals and 10 assists — and there is no honest way to frame this matchup without acknowledging that the Flyers are walking into a buzzsaw. MacKinnon's production isn't just leading his team; it's the kind of pace that warps game plans and forces opposing coaches to make uncomfortable decisions about how much attention one player can absorb before the rest of the lineup burns you. Mackenzie Blackwood is expected to start in net for Colorado, and the Avalanche's 5-2-1 record suggests he's been given enough support to work with.

For Philadelphia, the situation is bleak but not entirely without a pulse. Matvei Michkov leads the Flyers with 4 goals and 5 points, which is a legitimate bright spot on a team that has managed just one win in ten outings. Sean Couturier has chipped in 3 assists, showing he can still facilitate — but three helpers on a 1-6-3 team tells you something about how little has gone right around him. Joseph Woll is expected to start in net for the Flyers, and he'll need to be sharp early if Philadelphia wants any chance of keeping this competitive.

Our model doesn't have a validated read on this one, so we're not going to manufacture a number and dress it up as conviction. What we can say plainly: the record gap between these two teams is real, MacKinnon's point total is real, and the Flyers' struggles are real. Opinion: this looks like a mismatch on paper, and unless Woll steals the first period and Michkov finds another gear, it's hard to construct a scenario where Philadelphia controls this game. Watch Michkov — if he's going to be the face of this franchise, nights like this are where you find out what he's actually made of.
