Kings vs. Pelicans: Two 0-4 Teams Desperate for a Win
Something has to give tonight at Smoothie King Center — Sacramento and New Orleans are both sitting at 0-4, making this one of the more quietly urgent games on the early-season calendar. Our model doesn't have a validated read on this one, so we're going straight to the tape.
Two teams, zero wins between them, one gym. That's the uncomfortable reality facing both the Kings and the Pelicans when they tip off at 8:00 PM ET tonight. Early-season records can be deceiving, but 0-4 is 0-4 — and whoever walks out of New Orleans without a win is staring down an 0-5 start that will demand real answers. This is not a game either franchise can afford to treat as a building block.
On the Sacramento side, the offensive engine is clear. Zach LaVine is averaging 27.2 points per game, which is the kind of production that keeps a broken team competitive on any given night. The problem — and this is opinion — is that scoring volume alone doesn't fix a 0-4 record. Domantas Sabonis is doing everything short of winning: 16.5 rebounds and 7.2 assists per game are numbers that belong on a winning team's stat sheet, not a winless one. Sacramento's talent is not the issue. Something structural is.
New Orleans has its own star-power paradox. Zion Williamson is averaging 21.8 points per game, and Dejounte Murray is distributing at 6.0 assists per game — that's a functional offensive core on paper. Derik Queen pulling down 9.2 rebounds per game adds a legitimate interior presence. And yet: 0-4. In my opinion, the Pelicans have the home-court edge tonight, and Smoothie King Center gives them a genuine advantage they haven't been able to capitalize on yet this season. Whether that changes tonight is the question. Our model doesn't have a strong lean either way on this one, and frankly, that feels right — two struggling teams, too many variables, no clean edge to grab. Watch Sabonis against whatever the Pelicans throw at him in the paint. That battle may decide everything.
