Rangers vs. Twins: Two Losing Records, One Afternoon to Matter
Neither the Texas Rangers (80-81) nor the Minnesota Twins (76-85) are playing for anything that looks like October baseball, but that doesn't make Sunday's 3:10 PM ET matchup at Target Field meaningless — pride, roster evaluations, and individual stat lines are all still on the line. Our model doesn't have a validated read on this one, so we're going straight to the tape.
MacKenzie Gore is expected to start for Texas, and the Rangers will need him to eat innings against a Twins lineup that, despite the losing record, has some genuine offensive teeth. On the Minnesota side, Dean Kremer is set to take the mound — a pitcher who will need to navigate a Rangers offense anchored by Jake Burger, the most dangerous bat in this lineup by a considerable margin. Burger has slugged 28 home runs and driven in 90 runs this season. Those are not numbers you produce by accident, and Kremer will have to make real decisions about how to pitch around him. Ezequiel Duran's .262 average gives Texas another contact option to keep the Twins honest.
For Minnesota, the offensive identity is similarly concentrated. Kody Clemens has hit 27 home runs — one fewer than Burger — making this a rare late-September game where both teams' power leaders are within a single long ball of each other. That's a genuinely interesting subplot. Josh Bell leads the Twins with 93 RBI, edging Burger by three, and Luke Keaschall's .283 average gives Minnesota the best pure contact hitter in this game. If Keaschall gets on base consistently, Bell and Clemens have the pop to do damage.
With no validated model read available, I'm not going to manufacture a lean out of thin air — that's not how this works. What I will say is this: two sub-.500 teams, two pitchers with something to prove, and four legitimate power threats between the two lineups makes for a game that could go sideways fast. Target Field at 3:10 PM in late September has a certain end-of-season energy to it. Catch it on MLB.TV, Twins.TV, or Rangers Sports Network.
