Padres Chase a 97-Win Dodgers Squad at Dodger Stadium

Nine games separate these two NL West rivals in the standings, and Thursday night at Dodger Stadium, San Diego gets a chance to make a statement. No model read is available for this one — so the matchup has to speak for itself, and it has plenty to say.

The Dodgers come in at 97-61, one of the best records in baseball, while the Padres sit at 88-70 — a solid club, but one that has spent the season chasing Los Angeles rather than leading it. Nick Pivetta is expected to start for San Diego, and he'll be walking into one of the toughest environments in the sport. Tyler Glasnow is set to take the mound for the Dodgers, and this is exactly the kind of late-September showcase game that defines a pitching staff's identity.

On the offensive side, the Padres will lean on a pair of veterans who have carried the lineup all year. Manny Machado leads the club with 29 home runs and 87 RBI — numbers that put him squarely in the conversation as San Diego's most dangerous bat. Fernando Tatis Jr. is hitting .287, and when those two are locked in together, the Padres have enough firepower to hurt anyone. The problem is who they're facing: Shohei Ohtani leads the Dodgers with 30 home runs and 80 RBI, and Freddie Freeman is hitting .290 at the top of that order. That is a formidable one-two punch, and Pivetta will need to be sharp to navigate it.

Our model doesn't have a validated read on this game, and honestly, that's worth noting rather than papering over. What we can say is this: the Dodgers' record reflects a team that has been dominant all season, and Glasnow on the mound at home is a difficult assignment for any visiting lineup. The Padres are capable — Machado and Tatis give them a real chance every night — but San Diego needs near-perfect execution to leave Los Angeles with a win. Watch how Pivetta handles the middle of that Dodgers order early. That's where this game gets decided.
