Mets and Rangers Collide in a Late-Season Globe Life Afternoon

Two teams on the wrong side of .500 meet at Globe Life Field Thursday afternoon, with neither the Mets (73-85) nor the Rangers (78-80) playing for much beyond pride and paycheck at this point in September. Our model has no validated read on this one, so we're going straight to the tape.

On paper, this is a matchup between two clubs that have underdelivered in 2026. Texas at 78-80 at least has the better record, but neither side is sniffing the postseason. What makes this afternoon interesting is the pitching matchup: Zac Thornton is expected to start for New York, while Kumar Rocker is set to take the mound for the Rangers. Two names worth watching in their own right, though the burden of proof is on both to make this game feel like it matters.

For the Mets, the offensive identity runs through a handful of recognizable bats. Juan Soto leads the club with 27 home runs, a legitimate power number even on a losing team. Bo Bichette has driven in 76 runs, which speaks to his ability to produce in run-scoring situations despite the team's struggles. Carson Benge is hitting .275, making him New York's most reliable contact option in the lineup. The question is whether any of that production shows up against a Rangers staff that has its own things to prove.

Texas counters with Jake Burger, who has been the Rangers' most dangerous hitter by a wide margin — 27 home runs and a team-leading 89 RBI. That RBI total is the kind of number that earns a player a real offseason conversation. Brandon Nimmo is hitting .261 for the Rangers, giving them a solid on-base presence at the top of the order. With no model read to anchor this preview, the honest framing is this: watch Burger. If he gets into one against Thornton, Globe Life Field will have its moment of the afternoon. Everything else is September baseball doing what September baseball does when the standings have already moved on without you.
