Cole vs. Rodriguez: Yankees and Diamondbacks Clash at Chase Field

The Yankees arrive in Phoenix sitting at 88-64, with a comfortable cushion but no reason to coast this late in September. Arizona at 80-73 is fighting for every game, and Chase Field on a Friday night is not a friendly place to sleepwalk through.

Gerrit Cole is expected to take the mound for New York, and whenever he's penciled in, the pitching matchup becomes the story. Eduardo Rodriguez is set to start for Arizona, and this is the kind of late-season duel where the gap between two rotations can define an entire series. Neither assignment is confirmed until first pitch, but if both starters take the hill as projected, this shapes up as a genuine pitcher's showcase — or a game where the offense that breaks through first holds all the leverage.

On the offensive side, Ben Rice is the name Yankees fans are watching most closely. His 38 home runs and 92 RBI make him one of the more dangerous bats in the lineup, and a hitter with that kind of pop doesn't need many pitches to change a scoreline. Cody Bellinger's .276 average adds a contact dimension that keeps opposing pitchers honest. For Arizona, Gabriel Moreno is quietly having a serious season — .307 average and 75 RBI from the catcher position is a profile that demands respect. Nolan Arenado's 26 home runs give the Diamondbacks their own power threat, and in a ballpark like Chase Field, one swing can erase a deficit in a hurry.

Our model doesn't have a validated read on this one, so we're not going to manufacture a lean where there isn't one. What we can say plainly: a Yankees team with an eight-game edge in the standings has more margin for error, but Arizona's lineup has the pieces to make any lead feel fragile. Watch how the middle innings unfold once the starters hand it off — that's where this game is likely to be decided. First pitch is 9:40 PM ET at Chase Field, available on MLB.TV, DBACKS.TV, and YES.
