deGrom vs. Gilbert: Two Struggling Clubs Meet at T-Mobile Park
Neither the Rangers (72-74) nor the Mariners (68-78) are playing for much beyond pride at this point in September, but that doesn't make Thursday's 4:10 PM ET matchup at T-Mobile Park any less interesting on paper. Two legitimate pitching talents are expected to take the mound, and late-season games have a way of producing performances that matter for next year's roster decisions.
Jacob deGrom is expected to start for Texas, and whenever that name appears on a lineup card, the pitching matchup earns your attention regardless of standings. Across the diamond, Logan Gilbert is set to take the mound for Seattle — a pairing that, at least on paper, sets up as a low-scoring, pitcher-friendly afternoon in the Pacific Northwest. T-Mobile Park has historically played well for pitchers, and with two capable arms projected to go, don't expect a slugfest.
The offensive burden for Texas figures to fall heavily on Jake Burger, who leads the club with 26 home runs and 83 RBI on the season. Those are legitimate power numbers, and Burger represents the kind of middle-of-the-order threat that can flip a pitcher's duel with one swing. Ezequiel Duran's .272 average gives the Rangers a contact option to set the table, but if deGrom is dealing, Texas may not need much run support anyway. For Seattle, Randy Arozarena is the engine — hitting .273 with 22 home runs and 67 RBI, he's the one Mariners bat capable of doing real damage against elite pitching. Arozarena's combination of average and power makes him the most complete offensive threat on either roster today.
Our model doesn't have a validated read on this game, so we're not going to manufacture a lean where one doesn't exist. What we can say is this: when deGrom is healthy and on the mound, the Rangers are a different team, and Gilbert is no pushover for a Seattle club that needs wins to salvage something from a disappointing season. Watch Burger and Arozarena — whichever power bat does more damage against a quality starter is likely carrying his team home.
