Mets Visit Rate Field Needing Answers Against a Surging White Sox

The New York Mets roll into Rate Field on Sunday afternoon carrying a 59-71 record, facing a Chicago White Sox club that has been doing something right at 67-62. There's no model read to lean on for this one, so the game has to speak for itself — and the personnel matchup gives us plenty to chew on.

Start with the records and the story writes itself: the Mets are a team treading water, while the White Sox sit above .500 and have real-season stakes attached to every win. New York sends Nolan McLean to the mound, expected to start in what figures to be a tough assignment against a Chicago lineup with genuine pop. Sean Newcomb is set to take the mound for the White Sox, and the home crowd at Rate Field will be behind him from the first pitch.

On the offensive side, the Mets' most interesting name is Carson Benge, who is hitting .276 with 16 home runs — a legitimate threat if he gets something to drive. Bo Bichette leads the Mets in RBI at 66, which tells you he's been doing the dirty work in the middle of the order all season. The question is whether either of them can do enough damage against a White Sox pitching staff working in front of a lineup that has real teeth.

And those teeth belong mostly to Miguel Vargas. Twenty-nine home runs and 74 RBI is a season that demands attention — Vargas is the kind of hitter who can end a game with one swing, and McLean will need to navigate around him carefully. Chase Meidroth adds a .272 average at the top of the order, giving Chicago a contact presence to set the table. The White Sox have the positional advantage here: better record, home field, and a lineup anchored by a power hitter in the middle of a genuinely productive season. No model read means no lean from us — but if you're watching this one, keep your eyes on Vargas every time he steps in. He's the most dangerous player on the field.
