Rangers Try to Gain Ground; Athletics Look to Spoil at Sutter Health Park

Two teams heading in opposite directions meet Sunday afternoon in Sacramento, where a 4:05 PM ET first pitch sets the stage for a game that matters more to one side than the other. Texas at 61-63 is still fighting for relevance, while Oakland at 48-75 has little left to play for beyond development and disruption.

The Rangers enter this one needing wins badly. At 61-63, Texas is a team that has spent most of this season treading water — not bad enough to fully sell off, not good enough to feel comfortable. Cody Bradford is expected to take the mound for the Rangers, and how he performs against a rebuilding Athletics lineup will say a lot about whether this rotation has anything left to give down the stretch. On the offensive side, Jake Burger leads the club with 71 RBI, making him the run-production anchor Texas leans on when games get tight. Joc Pederson's 22 home runs give the lineup genuine pop, and Brandon Nimmo's .271 average provides a steadying presence at the top of the order. This is a lineup that can score — the question is whether it shows up consistently.

For Oakland, Jacob Lopez is expected to start, taking the ball for a club that has won just 48 games against 75 losses. The Athletics' offensive identity runs almost entirely through Tyler Soderstrom right now. The young catcher is hitting .245 with 19 home runs and 56 RBI — numbers that represent real production on a team that hasn't had much to celebrate. If Soderstrom gets into a Bradford fastball early, Sutter Health Park could get loud in a hurry. Oakland has nothing to lose here, and that freedom can make a last-place team genuinely dangerous on any given afternoon.

Our model doesn't have a validated read on this game, so we're not going to manufacture a lean where one doesn't exist. What we can say plainly: the Rangers need this more, but need and execution are two different things. Watch Soderstrom against Bradford — that matchup could define the afternoon.
