Rockies and Giants Collide in a Battle of Mediocrity at Oracle
Two teams sitting below .500 meet at Oracle Park on Sunday afternoon, each desperate to separate themselves from the National League basement. Our model doesn't have a strong lean on this one — which, given the personnel involved, might be the most honest thing anyone can say about it.
Neither the Colorado Rockies (39-58) nor the San Francisco Giants (40-55) are playing winning baseball right now, but that doesn't mean there's nothing to watch. On the mound, Michael Lorenzen is expected to start for Colorado, while Trevor McDonald is set to take the mound for San Francisco. Two pitchers, two question marks — the kind of arms-race uncertainty that can make a mid-July afternoon game genuinely unpredictable.
Offensively, the Giants carry the more dangerous individual threat. Luis Arraez is hitting .332, which is the kind of average that makes opposing pitchers lose sleep — he's a contact machine who punishes any mistake left over the plate. Rafael Devers adds a completely different dimension: 19 home runs and 52 RBI give San Francisco a legitimate power presence in the middle of the order. Lorenzen will need to navigate that combination carefully, because Devers in particular has the kind of pop that can flip a game in a single swing. On the Colorado side, Hunter Goodman's 27 home runs are legitimately impressive for a team that hasn't done much right this season — he's a threat McDonald cannot afford to take lightly. Troy Johnston (.304 average) and Jake McCarthy (52 RBI) round out a Rockies lineup that is more functional than its record suggests.
Our model doesn't have a validated read on this game, and we're not going to manufacture conviction where none exists. What we can say is that this is a coin-flip matchup between two flawed rosters, with the Giants holding a slight edge in lineup quality on paper. Watch Arraez and Goodman — those two, more than anyone else on the field today, are most likely to decide which way this one breaks. First pitch at Oracle Park is set for 4:05 PM ET.
